HEALTH CARE
Veronica Kalenik (formerly Veronica Galvalisi) is a Family Nurse Practitioner who has practiced exclusively at Federally-Qualified Health Centers throughout the United States. In Chicago, she has cared for families in Humboldt Park, Belmont Cragin, Little Village, and Brighton Park, while working as a bilingual and bicultural medical provider.
TEACHING
Prior to embarking on her career in nursing, Veronica worked as an AmeriCorps educator, with Teach for America. In this capacity, Veronica was a high school science instructor at Howard Area Leadership Academy and Noble Street Charter Schools, teaching biology, chemistry, physics, and serving as a student advisor.
PHILANTHROPY
Veronica has always sought out opportunities to do more. As a teacher, Veronica developed an award-winning, after-school robotics program. As a nurse, she coordinated a campaign to raise funds for patients during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic. Plus, she has always promoted school-based health centers as a strategy to improve medical outcomes for at-risk students.

Veronica serves as a Family Nurse Practitioner at the PCC Community Wellness Center, located inside of Steinmetz High School . Prior to this role, Veronica cared for patients at PCC Salud Family Health Center and PCC West Town Family Health Center.

Veronica serves as an Assistant Professor within the College of Nursing's Department of Community, Systems, and Mental Health Nursing. In this capacity, she empowers two distinct cohorts of graduate students. First, she teaches students enrolled in Rush University's Diagnostics for Advanced Practice Registered Nurses. Second, she created a curriculum for a Public Health Nursing Clinical experience. Veronica views this responsibility as an opportunity to educate the next generation of nursing leaders.
While serving on the frontline of the Coronavirus pandemic, Crain's Business recognized Veronica's research and initiative for spurring the movement to conduct drive-through Coronavirus testing in Chicago. As the Associate Director of Esperanza's Nurse Practitioner Postgraduate Fellowship Program, she was named an Emerging Nurse Leader by the Illinois Nurses Foundation. As a clinician, the MedStatix Patient Experience Platform recognized Veronica as a Top Provider for Patient Satisfaction in the State of Illinois.
Veronica's first experience as a health care provider was as a Resident in the Community Health Center's Nurse Practitioner Postgraduate Residency Training Program, in New Britain, Connecticut. During the year-long experience, she was immersed in specialty medical rotations. Veronica also learned how to manage the workload associated with serving in a Federally Qualified Health Center while maintaining her ability to care for her patients.

Veronica dedicated herself to creating an inquiry-based science curriculum, teaching more than 300 students in Chicago's Rogers Park and West Town communities. During her four years as a classroom leader, she was entrusted as a Biology, Chemistry, and Advanced Placement Physics instructor. Her strong example as a woman in science inspired many of her students.
EDUCATION
Doctorate of Nursing Practice
Veronica earned her doctorate degree from Rush University's College of Nursing, with a specialization in Nursing Practice, Transformational Leadership, and Population Health. Her academic study concentrated on the intersection of mental health, minority communities, and Chicago's high school population served by school-based health centers.
Master of Science in Nursing
Veronica graduated from the University of Illinois at Chicago as a beneficiary of the Health Resources and Services Administration's Advanced Nursing Education Expansion program. She was recognized as the College of Nursing's Most Outstanding Student. She also earned the opportunity to complete a rigorous Nurse Practitioner Residency Program in New Britain, Connecticut.
Veronica graduated from the University of Chicago, after completing her high school education in a suburb near Memphis, Tennessee. She was a volunteer with the University of Chicago's Neighborhood Schools Program. She also studied abroad in Quito, Ecuador and earned special recognition for her Spanish fluency.
